Nez

Navajo Nation

Chester Nez was a Native American, a member of the Navajo Nation, and one of the original Navajo Code Talkers who played a crucial role in World War II by developing and using an unbreakable code based on the Navajo language to secure military communications. Born on September 23, 1915, in Chi Chil Tah, Arizona, Nez joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and contributed significantly to the Allied war effort until his discharge in 1945. After the war, he dedicated himself to education and advocating for Native American rights, and in 2001, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal along with other Code Talkers. Chester Nez passed away on June 4, 2014, leaving a legacy of bravery, innovation, and cultural pride.
